3 Simple Summer Lawn Care Tips and Tricks
Is there a better summer feeling than stepping out, barefoot into a yard of lush, green grass? From running through a sprinkler to chasing fireflies, having a lawn that’s the envy of the neighborhood is a goal worth keeping. To help you get the lawn of your dreams, here is a list of our top three summer lawn care tips.
Mow Smarter
One of the best ways to keep your lawn a verdant green is to make sure you’re mowing it correctly. Start by making sure your mower blade isn’t set too low. Not only will taller grass prevent weeds from sprouting, but it will also ensure that your lawn can withstand the heat and sun. Second, leave those grass clippings where they land. While you might be tempted to bag or rake them up, leaving the grass clippings will ensure that your freshly cut grass is protected from the sun while the cut is fresh and will put nutrients back into the soil.
Don’t Over Fertilize
In general, your fertilizer should be applied before the heat of summer comes. This is because they can cause chemical burns to your lawn. If the fertilizer does work and tender new grass shoots sprout, they’ll be ill-equipped to deal with the weather and won’t adjust well.
Prevent Insects and Disease
Summer is when your lawn is most susceptible to insect pests and diseases such as mildew. If you begin to notice issues with bugs you may need to intervene, although most pest problems sort themselves out. If you notice a mosquito problem, you might look into a standing water or moisture issues. Likewise, if your lawn is too damp you might begin to notice powdery mildew or brown patches. If this is the case, you may need to cut down on watering and refrain from watering at night.
