How Grass is Affected by Frost

Frost can take a big toll on the grass in your yard for many reasons.

While we’ve now entered the month of March, we’re not quite in the clear for winter temperatures. It’s still possible for frigid weather conditions to impact your yard. One way your yard can be impacted is due to frost. Frost can take a big toll on the grass in your yard for many reasons.

Frost Can Cause Cell Damage to Your Grass

Frost can cause big problems for plant cells because the cell walls can get ruptured, resulting in damage to the tissue. In addition to this, when your grass goes through various freezing and thawing cycles throughout the winter, even more damage can end up happening to the cells of your lawn.

You May See Wilting and Discoloring

Have you noticed that your lawn looks brown during the winter? If so, there are a few reasons why this could be the case. Sometimes, it’s simply because your lawn has gone dormant for the season, which is perfectly normal, and not a sign that your yard is in bad health.

Other times, however, frost damage can be the culprit of brown grass. If you’ve noticed that your grass is not only brown, but also looking limp, frost damage could be one of the reasons, especially if people have walked over your lawn as well.

The Growth in Your Grass is Stunted

During winter, it’s perfectly normal for grass to stop growing. With that said, it should be able to continue growing once winter is over. A problem with frost is that it can have long-term effects on your lawn. This means that your grass might have trouble growing even after we get into the spring season.

Your Lawn is More Susceptible to Disease

When your grass gets frosty, it makes the blades more delicate and fragile. This raises the likelihood that the blades will break. Once this happens, it becomes harder for your grass blades to heal, making it more likely for these blades to become victim to disease. There’s also the chance that they could be affected by pest damage.
