A little bit of rain every now and then can be a good thing for your lawn. After all, your grass and plants need the occasional rain shower in order to thrive. With that said, there is such a thing as too much rain, and when you’re about to experience heavy rain, you need to be ready. Today, we’ll help you get prepared for when your lawn has to experience heavy rain.
Cut Your Grass Slightly Higher Than Normal
In anticipation of heavy rain, you should keep your grass taller than you usually do. Not only do taller grass blades have more resilience against stress, but you also offer your roots more protection. You reduce the chances of erosion by keeping your soil in one place while it rains too. Once the rain has stopped, you should refrain from cutting your grass until it has completely dried, even if your grass blades are a little tall.
Have a Good Drainage System Prepared
You don’t want your lawn to become waterlogged. As such, a proper drainage system is vital if you’re expecting heavy rain in the near future. Before the rain actually shows up, you should look at your lawn and see where water typically starts to pool. Apply soil to those areas, then grade the surface so that water gets redirected away from the house.
If there are spots that are especially vulnerable to pooling, you could add sand and organic matter to the soil, both of which being useful for improving drainage.
Maintain Your Gutters
If your gutters are clogged, then rain won’t get redirected away from your house. Instead, water will overflow from your gutters, causing certain parts of your lawn to get flooded with water. By properly maintaining your guttering system, you can help keep your lawn much safer. Take some time to clear out your gutters so that water can pass through them. If your gutters are damaged, you’ll want to get them repaired ahead of any heavy rain so that your lawn doesn’t get flooded once the rain arrives.
