How to Keep Frost Damage From Happening to Your Plants

Here are tips we have that can help prevent the occurrence of frost damage to your plants.

Winter can be a tough time of year for your outdoor landscape. Many plants go dormant during this time, and the winter cold can make it more difficult for them to survive until spring. One factor that causes problems is frost, and it’s best to prevent this damage from happening whenever possible. Here are tips we have that can help prevent the occurrence of frost damage to your plants.

Cover Your Plants

Just like how we use blankets to keep warm during winter, you can use plant cloths on your garden. This reduces how much cold winter air can affect your greenery. Make sure to use a lightweight cloth, like a bed sheet, as a cover. You don’t want to use plastic covers because these retain moisture, which can cause severe damage to your plants.

You’ll want to apply these plant cloths around sunset. Once you’ve applied them, make sure that they’re anchored to the ground so that they don’t get blown away.

Bring Plants Indoors When You Can

If you have any vulnerable container plants around your yard, consider bringing them inside to protect them from the winter cold. While you do want to keep them away from the cold, that doesn’t mean you should put them in the warmest area of your home. It’s actually not recommended to place them near fireplaces, furnace vents, and other heat sources. While you are trying to protect your plants from excess cold, excess heat can also be detrimental to their health.

Make Sure You’re Giving Them Enough Water

Any plant is going to need water to survive, and that doesn’t change during winter. While winter does bring snow, that’s not a substitute for watering your plants. Any plant that’s properly hydrated is going to be able to handle light frosts more easily. This is because water in your soil and the plant cells will have an easier time holding in heat. It’s best to apply water early in the day. This way, there will be plenty of time for the water to get absorbed into the soil.
