Winter is a wonderful season for many reasons. It’s a time for getting cozy by the fire, drinking hot cocoa, and enjoying the many holidays that come with the season. When it comes to your lawn, however, winter may not be so great, as the cold and sometimes snowy weather conditions can impact your yard significantly. Snow is a catalyst for lawn damage, but there are ways that you can minimize how much damage your yard sustains.
Keep Your Lawn Aerated
To aerate your lawn, you want to pull out plugs of soil from your yard. By doing this, the roots of your plants will have access to as much air as they need. This extra air will help to keep your plants healthy throughout the winter season.
Get Heavy Objects Out of Your Yard
You don’t want the grass in your yard to get compacted. With that said, when there’s enough pressure weighing down your grass, this is a strong possibility. The likelihood of compaction only increases once there’s a heavy blanket of snow covering your lawn, so getting heavy items out of your yard helps to relieve your grass of extra compacting.
Alternate Pathways When Walking Through Your Yard
Just like how heavy objects and snow can cause your grass to compact, so too can your own footsteps. When you walk on the same patches of grass over and over, the repeated pressure can build up over time, causing your grass to become more compacted. By switching up which paths you take, you can distribute pressure across your lawn more evenly. This means that there’s no single area in your yard that’s taking on more pressure than the rest.
Stay Off of Your Lawn, When Possible
In a similar manner to our last point, the less often you walk on your lawn, the less compacting your grass will sustain. Therefore, whenever possible, you should try to keep off of your lawn. Doing this will relieve your yard of unnecessary pressure that could cause damage to the grass.
