How Your Outdoor Landscape Benefits From Snow

Find out what perks snow can offer to your outdoor landscape.

We’re in the midst of winter, and there’s still the potential for plenty of snowy weather in the coming weeks. Snow can sometimes be seen as a pain to handle around your yard. After all, you’ll have to do a lot of shoveling to clear it from your driveway, and snow can also be detrimental to various greenery around your outdoor landscape. With that said, snow also comes with its fair share of benefits as well. Find out what perks snow can offer to your outdoor landscape.

Offer Insulation to Plants and Soil

This might sound crazy, but snow can actually shield your plants and soil from the winter cold. This is because snow acts as an insulator, which stops the freezing temperatures of winter from affecting your outdoor landscape any further. We’ve heard the term “blanket” of snow before, and this term is actually quite fitting, considering the insulating properties that it can offer to your yard.

Snow Offers Additional Moisture

Snow is also beneficial to your outdoor landscape because you give your soil additional moisture to use during winter. Once snow melts and turns into water, that water will get absorbed into the soil, which is especially handy since winter winds can cause soil to dry up quickly. Since snow is able to give your soil more moisture, you’ll have that moisture available to you once the spring season arrives.

What to Do About Heavy Snow

Sometimes, there can be a heavy amount of snow that affects your outdoor landscape. This can put added strain on tree branches and shrubs. To prevent branches and shrubs from being damaged by snow, there are a couple of things that you can do.

To start, you should brush as much snow away from branches and shrubs as you can. The less snow that’s affecting them, the less strain they’ll endure. Don’t remove ice, however, as this can cause branches to break. For those with young trees, you should consider wrapping the trunks with tree wrap. This will stop tree bark from splitting as a result of fluctuating temperatures outside.
