Reasons for Your Lawn to Become Yellow

Keep reading to learn how your lawn can turn yellow so you can take measures to prevent them.

We’re now beginning the spring season, and it’s the time when your lawn starts to come back to life after being dormant all winter. You’ll want to keep your lawn healthy throughout the spring season, but there are hazards that could cause the grass around your yard to become yellow. Knowing how to avoid these factors will help your grass be healthy throughout the year. Keep reading to learn how your lawn can turn yellow so you can take measures to prevent them.

Not Watering Your Grass Properly

Sometimes, improper watering techniques are what cause your grass to turn yellow. When lawns are watered every day, the root systems can become shallow. This causes grass to become weaker, so less stress is needed to turn it yellow.

On the flipside, not watering grass enough can also make it yellow. Yellowing of grass can happen when your lawn gets dried out. You’ll know if your grass is too dry when you pull on your grass, and the grass blades pop up.

Your Lawn’s Soil is Too Compact

When soil gets too compact, the roots of your grass will have a tough time penetrating into the soil. This makes your grass weaker and prone to yellowing. Compact soil tends to happen because of too much foot traffic or overwatering. This means that staying off the lawn and regulating the water intake for your grass can make your lawn healthier.

Using Too Much Nitrogen Fertilizer

We’re told that fertilizer is a good thing for our lawns. While this is true in moderation, there is such a thing as too much. When too much nitrogen fertilizer is applied to your lawn, it can result in fertilizer burn, which makes the grass turn yellow.

If you realize that your grass has been burnt, see if the roots are still living. If they are, you should water your lawn well, which could let your grass revive itself. If this doesn’t work, you should rake the affected area. Once the area has been raked and tilled, you’ll want to water and overseed that spot in order to help your lawn regrow.
