Watering Tips You Can Use For the Remainder of Autumn
Taking care of plants is a lot of work. Now that we’re approaching winter, it becomes more urgent than ever to make sure your plants receive the proper care. After all, you need to make sure they last through the winter season so they can show off their beauty once spring arrives. Part of proper plant care involves making sure they get the right amount of water. When watering your plants through the autumn season, here’s what you’ll want to do.
Watering Your Trees & Shrubs
Trees and shrubs have fairly large root balls that need to be watered. As such, you should water each of them for around 5-10 minutes for every four feet of plant you have. As an alternative, you can put a sprinkler in the general vicinity of your trees and shrubs, and let the sprinklers water the area for around 3-5 hours. What’s most important is that you let the water soak into the soil without either puddling or allowing runoff.
Tending to Your Lawn
Keeping your lawn sufficiently watered is essential for keeping grass alive. You’ll know if your lawn needs water if you see lingering footprints after you’ve walked on the grass. Typically, your lawn should be watered close to first thing in the morning, before the sun has a chance to get too high in the sky.
Perennials and Groundcover
These plants have smaller root balls than what you may find with trees or shrubs. As such, the ideal way of watering these plants is to use a sprinkler. You’ll want to let your sprinkler run for around 1-2 hours so that water has enough time to penetrate through the first 6-12 inches’ worth of soil.
How to Tell if the Soil is Moist
Did you know that the root balls of your plants can be dry even when the top of the soil is moist? To tell if your soil is truly moist, you need to use your hands, gently dig into the soil, and check on the root balls yourself. Be careful that you don’t damage the roots in the process.
