Ways That Soil Erosion Can Be Caused

Today, we’ll be reviewing what causes soil erosion so you can prevent it from happening to your yard.

Is your yard dealing with soil erosion? Soil erosion can be a big problem for people’s yards. It’s the process through which topsoil is steadily lost. As soon as soil particles get loose, it only takes a couple of factors to remove it from your yard. Today, we’ll be reviewing what causes soil erosion so you can prevent it from happening to your yard.

Heavy Rainfall

As rain hits the surface of your soil, the rain is able to break down the topmost particles on the soil’s surface. The rain then carries those particles with it, washing away soil in runoff. When too much heavy rainfall occurs, it can result in flooding and extreme local erosion to nearby bedrock.

High Winds

High winds are another catalyst that can result in soil erosion for people’s properties. This is especially likely to occur in places that have drier climates and seasons. Places that are either arid or semi-arid will be quite vulnerable to this type of erosion.

Rain isn’t the only weather condition that can whip up soil particles, as strong gusts of wind can take loosened soil particles and scatter them far away from people’s yards. These soil particles can get blown into waterways and other places, leaving a heavy impact on soil beds.

Urbanization & Deforestation

One way to protect topsoil is to have vegetative land cover. When urbanization takes place, this protective land cover gets taken away, leaving the soil much more vulnerable. Trees do an especially good job at holding soil in place, which protects against the process of soil erosion. Once trees are removed, soil is more susceptible to being moved around by the aforementioned factors we’ve listed.

Agricultural Tillage

Agricultural tillage also contributes to soil erosion, especially whenever it makes use of machinery to do it. When agricultural tillage is carried out using machinery, pathways for water runoff are created, especially because field tillage uses up and down movements that disrupt particles of soil. This accelerates the pace at which water is able to wash soil away.
